Hello garden enthusiasts! It's been an exciting and productive week here at Harvest All Year, and I'm thrilled to share all the latest happenings with you. Imagine you're standing right here in the garden with us, feeling the buzz of life and growth all around.
Baby goats and growing chicks
First off, we have some thrilling news: our goats might be pregnant! This means we could welcome some adorable baby goats in a few months. The anticipation is building! Meanwhile, our chicks are growing bigger and are almost ready for their first adventure outside. Next week, they’ll get to explore the great outdoors for the first time, and we can't wait to see them scampering around.
Egg-laying hens
Our hens have been absolute champions, laying a bounty of eggs every day. It's such a delight to gather fresh eggs each morning, knowing they’ll end up in delicious, home-cooked meals. The hens are happy, and so are we!
Bountiful harvest
This week, we’ve had a fantastic harvest. Our onions are now drying, and they look magnificent. We also picked cucumbers, a few carrots, zucchini, a patty pan squash, and the first of our green and runner beans. The potato patch yielded an amazing crop, and it's so satisfying to see the results of our hard work.
Heatwave challenges
We faced a scorching heatwave with temperatures soaring over 104 degrees. Managing the water was critical, and we made it a top priority. Despite the heat, our plants have held up well. Our pumpkins, in particular, have shown resilience, continuing to produce plenty of fruit even under the hot sun. Unfortunately, this heatwave is expected to continue for a while, with no immediate end in sight. We'll be on high alert to ensure our plants and animals stay healthy and hydrated.
Tomatoes and sunflower
Our first Black Prince tomatoes are starting to ripen, adding a splash of color to the garden. Our giant sunflower is already nearly 2 meters tall but still hasn’t bloomed. It’s a bit of a mystery, and we’re eagerly waiting for it to reveal its stunning flower.
Pickling and new Growth
We’ve made our first batch of pickles with cucumbers and red onions in a sweet and sour brine. They’re a tasty treat that we’re excited to share. The kohlrabi is starting to take shape, and the first endives are popping up, promising fresh greens soon.
Sharing the journey
I’m also working on a way to share all these experiences and my gardening knowledge with you. Whether it's tips on growing your own vegetables, managing livestock, or dealing with weather challenges, I want to make sure you can benefit from everything I’ve learned. Stay tuned for more details on how you can get involved and learn alongside us.
Wrapping up
This week has been full of hard work and rewarding moments. From the possibly pregnant goats to the growing chicks, the abundance of eggs from our hens, and the rich harvest of vegetables, there’s so much to be grateful for. The heatwave tested us, but with careful water management, our plants thrived. With the heatwave continuing, we’ll stay vigilant to keep everything flourishing. We’re eagerly looking forward to what the next weeks will bring.
Thank you for joining us on this journey at Harvest All Year. Stay tuned for more updates and happy gardening!
Warmest wishes,
Suzanne and family
